Jonas had prepared himself. He carried with him only a small bag filled with the bare essentials, food mostly. He needed to get out of here, out of the horrid country he'd loved so much growing up. He wasn't sure how he was going to succeed in leaving, with the Nazi troops on nearly every street, patrolling for anyone making the smallest of mistakes, the unfortunate Jew to come in their path.
He rubbed his hands over the front of his jacket. He was greatly chancing this, he'd removed the yellow star, the Star of David, from the front of this plain brown coat he wore over his white button up shirt. The star was tucked away in a pocket, just in case he was pulled to the side..maybe they'd go for him saying it'd fallen off. He doubted it, but it made him less of a target, without that thing glaring off his chest.
It was getting close to sundown now, he moved within a crowd all heading home from their various jobs, blending with the crowd as much as possible. He was just waiting to be pulled to the side, for them to know who he was..that he wore no star, for a bullet to be blasted through his head..or maybe he'd be unlucky enough to end up at one of those concentration camps. He swallowed hard, his mouth and throat dry.
He needed to get money to pay for a train ticket, he doubted he could walk the entire way out of this country. All the money they'd had was gone now, stolen by the invading soldiers. He rubbed his hand through his thick hair, wondering what he was even going to do. He should've planned more. He found himself wandering down some street, not too far from the station. Maybe he'd need to start on becoming a beggar..

Amelinda was walking home from a friend's house, greeting some people that she walked past with a smile and a wave, smiling at the people she didn't know. She knew she blended in with the rest of the crowd, yet a certain quality about her made her stick out like somebody wearing a bright yellow canary suit in a sea of people wearing black. People were drawn to her like a moth to flame, though she never asked for all this attention.
She hated to see the Nazi soldiers on nearly every corner, it dampened her spirits at the thought of what they could do to every person walking on the streets then if they so desired. She banished those thoughts from her head, unwilling to think of such morbid things. She turned her attention back to the people walking along, on their way home to their families. She was doing the same thing as the rest of them, going back to her family for the night, unsure of what tomorrow could possibly hold for any of them.
As she walked she spotted someone she didn't know and had really never seen before. She watched him as she walked, noticing the way he seemed nervous, but was trying to hide it. A thoughtful frown crossed her face and she headed in his direction after a moment, wondering if he was lost or if something else was wrong, something that could possibly lead to his death during these horrific times. She was beside him within moments, walking casually beside him. "Good evening," she said to him, loud enough for him to hear, but quiet enough that nobody else would unless they, too, were right beside them.

Jonas thought of his family. His sisters and mother, where they were possibly now. He closed his eyes a moment, sighing softly. He imagined them at the concentration camp, working beyond what they could possibly do..or perhaps they were already dead? He'd heard the stories of large numbers being killed all at once. He swallowed nothing, opening his eyes, staring toward the sky.
He didn't notice when the blond girl was beside him, not even thinking about it really, there were lots of people around. His heart jumped when she spoke to him, his dark eyes looking at her, focusing on her, taking her in. Why was she even speaking to him? Could she tell he was Jewish? Was she going to be like some Germans that would gladly turn in any Jew to the soldiers to be dragged off and stuffed in one of their camps.
He tried to keep from looking too nervous, licking his dry lips with his equally parched tongue, "Hello, miss," he managed, trying to sound casual at least. It just barely worked. He looked away from her briefly, glancing around the people, taking in where the soldiers stood at various points. He tucked his hands into his pockets, looking back to her.
He needed to be polite, sound somewhat normal at least, like he wasn't out of place here, look like he lived here..somewhere nearby. He studied her again briefly, "Is there something you need? Something you need help with?" he asked her, managing some of his confidence back, forcing the smallest of smiles.

Amelinda looked at him silently for a minute, trying to figure him out. She shook her head slowly to his questions. "No, there isn't anything I need help with. I do need to know something though," she said, smiling reassuringly at him. "Are you lost? You don't seem to really fit in here." She was still speaking so that nobody else could hear them. She hated eavesdropping, whether she happened to be the one doing it by accident or if anyone else was doing it, so she always talked quietly, no matter whose company she was in.
She watched him closely as she said that, wondering how he would react. "If you are, it's no problem, I can help you out. I know the area better than nearly anyone.. I know the safest ways to travel," she said to him, still smiling. It was a kind smile, nothing at all was fake about it and it just seemed right on her face, not like she smiled too much, but like it just belonged there.

Jonas was frowning again as he listened to her. Did he look lost? Did he really not fit in, he glanced around them. He wasn't really sure, he'd hoped he'd fit in..but if this girl noticed, surely the soldiers would too. He shook his head slightly, "No, not lost," he responded, speaking now just as quietly as she. He focused back on her, "I'm just going to the station...going..home," he said after a moment, not about to tell this girl he didn't even know that he was trying to get out of this country that he no longer felt any love for.
He didn't trust people here anymore, not after their old friends had betrayed them..stopped contacting them once the Nazis began with their anti-Jewish propoganda. They were the scum of the earth now, they weren't perfect enough. Blonde hair, blue eyes. He frowned at the thought. Hitler didn't even match his ideal Aryan race.
He studied the girl, "I know where the station is, so I will not be needing your help, thank you," he stated. He did need money though and he was sure she didn't carry around any and he couldn't very well ask her for any. He focused ahead of himself again, his eyes flickering to the guards occasionally.

Amelinda slowly nodded, biting the inside of her lip as she looked at him. She knew he wasn't from around here, knew he was hiding something. She wasn't going to press the matter, if he didn't want any help or was hiding something that big then she didn't want him to feel pressured and have anything bad happen from it. She nodded again. "Alright, I just thought.. Oh, never mind, It doesn't really matter what I thought then," she said to him, smiling easily again.
They were approaching her house fast and she knew if she dallied longer than necessary then her parents might send someone to retrieve her. She looked towards her house briefly then looked back at Jonas. "If you do need anything, anything at all, please feel free to stop by my house. I'll help you with whatever you need." She smiled at him kindly. "I live right there," she said, pointing at her house. "Just ask for Amelinda and somebody will get me right away." She hesitated a moment as she looked at him before speaking again. "I hope you get home safely," she told him.

Jonas kept his face blank as he listened to her, studying the train station not so far away. He glanced at her briefly. He wondered what she thought. He wanted to know if he was that easy to see through. He gave a little shrug, "Thank you for the offer," he said after a moment. He doubted he would go to her for help, he didn't even know her, didn't know her position on what was happening in this country right now. He licked his lips again, looking ahead to the station again.
The guards were heavier than he'd thought they'd be at this station, further out than the one he lived near. But there were the soldiers, checking people's papers. He thought of his own, printed clearly with the word Jew, bright for them to see, to show who he was..that he wasn't wearing his star. He felt sick. He didn't know how he was going to get out of this place..he was going to be trapped here unless he walked out. That would be a while and he really didn't have enough supplies to last him that long.
He glanced at her again, hesitating, "So..what..what do you think about what's happening to the country?' he asked her after a moment. He knew he'd need help with this at some point, but he needed to see how trustworthy she was..whether she'd immediately turn him in or offer some help to him.

'What a random question to ask,' Amelinda thought to herself after Jonas spoke the question. A frown crossed her face and she pursed her lips in thought as to how to best word how she felt about the situation now. "I think it's absolutely horrible. My father, of course, disagrees with me and thinks I should just go along with it, but I can't How can anyone go along with what's going on? Innocent people are disappearing every day for no other reason than the fact that they're Jews," she shook her head some, quickly falling silent after her little outburst. She wasn't even sure if this man was someone she could be saying that to. She could be killed for saying such things and if she was lucky to escape that then she would have her father to deal with if he found out.
"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said so much. Sometimes I just say things before really thinking them through," she said, having the decency to blush at her hotheaded opinion on the matter. "I just.. I believe it's wrong and I can't believe so many people just turn a blind eye," she said meekly, trying to say what she wanted to say without saying it in such a way that could get her in trouble.

He listened to her rant about this. It seemed sincere enough, but once she spoke of her father..saying she should just go along with it he knew he wouldn't be able to stay with them. He couldn't trust a person who went along with things so wrong. He frowned somewhat, so much for that idea. He looked at the ground a moment, "It is horrible, what some people will agree with..just to stay out of conflict," he said quietly, looking up to find a German soldier, swastika arm band over his green over coat just a few feet ahead of them, speaking with some people, checking papers before his grey eyes focused on them.
He stopped breathing then, this was the end. He'd barely gotten a few miles away and now this was it. He tried to act normal as the soldier ordered for their papers. Jonas fumbled a moment before he pulled his from a pocket in his coat, flattening them before holding them out with a slightly quivering hand.
The officer unfolded them, looking up from them to Jonas, his eyes shifting to the breast of his jacket. He let a hand drop, revealing the papers, Jew printed on the clearly, boldly. He flicked Jonas's jacket, "Where's your star, Jew?" he asked, a flicker of a smile crossing his face.
Jonas swallowed and fumbled in his jacket, pulling out the yellow fabric star, "Ah..It fell off on my way home..I'm not good with needle and thread," he managed to get out, glancing from the star to the soldier again, not meeting his eye though as that usually got a reaction from them.

Amelinda nodded her head, about to say something to him when the soldier came over. She pulled her papers out when he asked for them. When he checked Jonas' papers her eyes traveled to them, reading the bold print there that identified him as a Jew. Her eyes traveled to him briefly before looking back at the soldier, frowning slightly. She had seen him around before, but had never encountered him before now. She didn't fear for herself at this point, more afraid for Jonas and she didn't even know his name.
She swallowed as she looked at the soldier again. "It's my fault. I thought it would be funny if I pulled it off. He meant nothing by it. We were just going to my home now so I could fix it for him," she said. She wasn't really sure if that would be helping or not, but she couldn't just stay silent and not do anything to try and help. She would feel horrible if something happened to him and she didn't at least try to prevent it.

Jonas watched the officer as he listened to what Amelinda was saying. The soldier smiled slightly, "Oh? A little joke huh?" he said quietly, taking her papers, eyeing her, "What's a good German like you doing bringing home a filthy Jew, hm?" he questioned, though didn't wait for an answer. He nudged Jonas with his gun, causing him to jump slightly, "Best let the lady sew that back on for you, perhaps it won't fall...or be ripped off again," he said slowly, eyeing the pair of them now. "Maybe we'll see each other in the next round up," he added with a cold grin before he walked off, stopping another family to check their papers.
Jonas stood there, very still for a long time before he loosened up slowly. He stared at the star before tucking it in his pocket again with his papers. He looked at her briefly, "Thank you," he mumbled quietly.

Amelinda listened to the soldier's words and stayed quiet, though she sorely wanted to say something nasty to him. She bit her tongue to really keep from saying anything stupid, waiting until he left. She glared at his back, watching as he checked the other family's papers. She closed her eyes briefly and took a deep breath, letting it out slowly before turning slightly to look at Jonas.
She nodded her head some when he thanked her. "You're welcome," she said to him, grabbing his wrist and pulling him along with her in the direction of her house. "I hope you don't mind.. but I'd rather he didn't have a reason to do something so we might as well do what I said I was going to do.." she said to him as she walked.

Jonas glanced over at the soldier, watching him check the family's papers without incident, he closed his eyes a moment before looking back to her. He was startled when she grabbed his hand and started pulling him toward her house. He really didn't want to go, but he knew the soldier would end up doing something if he found him still without his star and without this girl. He followed her, glancing briefly back at the soldier again.
He watched her, "What will your father do?" he asked after a moment, he didn't want to end up in a camp because he allowed himself to be dragged to her house. If her father just went along with this stuff he might easily enough be able to allow Jonas to be taken away.

Amelinda didn't spare a second glance at the soldier as she headed to her house now. It was a fairly large house with lots of windows and a nice garden out front. She smiled at the sight of it. She really loved her house, it had such a calming presence for her, a place where she knew nothing could ever happen to her.. a place where she could always go to get help and to help others.
"Do? He won't do anything.. he's probably not even home," Amelinda said to Jonas. "And if he is he doesn't have to know that you're Jewish.. and if he finds out he won't make a big deal out of it if I don't want him to. He would never do anything that would wind up hurting me somehow," she told him. It was common knowledge to anybody living near them that she had her father wrapped tightly around her finger and he would do anything for her, no matter what it was.

Jonas looked up at her house when they reached it. It reminded him faintly of his own and his heart cracked just a little more as he thought to its state now, the windows broken out, the door broken on its hinges from being kicked in. He thought of the day he'd returned home to find no one there, their belongings flung around the rooms, not much left but the more personal things, some of which he'd stowed away in his pack or in pockets of his clothing.
He was relieved to hear her words, his stress easing up some though he still wasn't quite settled. He wasn't sure if he quite trusted her still, though he found it hard to trust anyone now. He shifted his attention from his house to her again. Her behavior rather reminded him of his sisters with their father. They'd always found it easy to bend him to their will.
