Amelinda led him up the few steps to her front door, turning the knob and pulling him inside with her. "Momma, I'm home," she called out loudly. A strikingly pretty blonde woman looked down towards her from the top of a flight of stairs to their right. A warm smile was settled on her features as she looked at her daughter. Her eyes traveled to Jonas after a minute, still smiling, though she was wondering who he was. Amelinda seemed to notice this and decided to introduce them. "Momma, this is.." she paused, looking at Jonas. She never did learn what his name was. "Um.. my friend.. who I met today and who needs a place to stay for the night," she said. Her mother nodded her head, smiling still. "Alright, dear."
Amelinda smiled briefly and then dragged Jonas off to the kitchen. She had had a long day and was rather thirsty now. She got herself a glass of water and turned to Jonas. "Would you like something?"

Jonas followed her inside, after a brief hesitation, though she didn't allow him long as she pulled him in. He glanced around briefly before focusing on Amelinda's mother as she showed herself at the top of a flight of stairs. He shifted, "Jonas Chesed," he introduced himself quickly as Amelinda spoke again, glancing at her briefly, giving her mother a smile, that never reached his eyes anymore. He wasn't sure if he'd stay the night..but if he had to it'd be nice at least.
He followed her to the kitchen, or was forced to as she dragged him. He watched her get herself a glass of water and became even more aware of his parched, desert of a mouth. He nodded, "Water would be wonderful, please," he responded.

Amelinda poured Jonas a glass of water as well and set it in front of him. She took a seat at the table, studying him curiously. "Well, it's nice to finally know your name Jonas Chesed," she said to him, smiling playfully. "I'm Amelinda Weiss, though I believe you already knew my first name." She had noticed that the smile he gave her mother didn't quite reach his eyes, but she didn't blame him. Even her smiles were starting to be seen less and less as times got worse and worse.
"I hope you don't mind me saying that you were going to be staying for the night. You don't have to if you don't want to, though you are certainly welcome to if you wish," she told him, nodding to back up her words.

Jonas picked up the glass, gulping it all down quickly, unable to help it. He felt so relieved when the cool liquid slid down his throat, his mouth no longer dry and sandpapery. He carefully set it back down, "I caught your name, yes," he said after a moment, "And I am sorry I didn't introduce myself earlier..I was just..hesitant," he stated. He slowly sat down at the table, watching her a moment, meeting her gaze before looking away again, staring around the kitchen.
He gave a slight shrug, "I don't mind you saying that..and thank you for that..I might if I need to. I'm not sure, I was hoping to board the train tonight..but I'm hesitant now.." he said quietly, shifting in his seat.

Amelinda watched him as he drank the entire glass. She stood up and refilled the glass, placing it in front of him and sitting down again. She nodded her head in understanding. "That's quite alright. I understand perfectly. you really can't be sure who to trust these days," she said quietly, thinking of a few of her own friends who she felt she couldn't trust anymore. She shook those thoughts away quickly.
"I really don't think it would be wise to try and board the train at all, especially tonight. The guards here can be pretty nasty and they look for any excuse to harass anyone. If they were to find out you were a Jew trying to board the train tonight they would have a field day with it and I don't want to imagine what they might do to you," she said quietly, frowning slightly.

He thanked her after she'd refilled his glass, taking a sip occasionally so she wouldn't have to immediately get up to refill it for him again. He slowly nodded, "It's hard to find anyone to trust, the people you used to trust can turn out quite the opposite," he mumbled, running his fingers over a pattern in the wood of the table, focusing on it as he spoke.
He frowned faintly as he listened to her, "I know it wouldn't be the smartest thing to do...but my only option is just to walk to get out of this country. I don't have enough supplies to last me that long...and it'd take days," he stated. "I can't stay here..and even if I'm taken into one of those horrible camps, I'll be able to hope that I end up with the rest of my family, be that there or in Heaven.."

Amelinda could relate to what he was saying. A few close friends of hers had told her just the other day that they didn't believe in what she believed in and had simply refused to talk to her or even look at her since then. She sighed quietly and nodded. "I know what you mean.." she mumbled.
She frowned in thought as she listened to what Jonas was saying. After a minute she smiled excitedly at him. "But you can stay here. Stay with me. We have the room for you to stay and the soldier's never bother us here," she said to him, speaking quickly like she normally did when she got really excited about something. "I'll protect you," she said finally, smiling at him still.

He was shaking his head before she could finish. "I can't do that..I don't want to be a burden and I don't want to hide out. I wouldn't be able to leave, I'd always be waiting for a neighbor to tell those soldiers you have a Jew living in your home," he stated. He shook his head again, "I can't put someone..your family..in danger because of me." He frowned, looking at her briefly.
He sat back in his seat, "I'd feel better if I left..and I'll return once this is all over..find out the fate of my family," he said quietly, his hands tightening into fists, knuckles white. "I already feel like they're probably all dead by now...mother never was the strongest looking woman..I've heard they don't bother with the weak ones," he said running his hands over the table.

Amelinda sighed, nodding though. It was worth a try to get him to stay. She didn't think the neighbors would tell really, but that just went to show how much she really didn't know about this situation in Germany right then. She didn't realize how bad things had gotten, living in her little sheltered world. "If you must leave then I'll help you any way that I can," she told him. "I'll get in contact with some of my parents friends who would be more than happy to help you out." She always tried to look on the positive side of things, tried to find a way to solve every problem.
"I can't tell you what they do there as I do not know myself, but I'm sure your family is still alive. They wouldn't just leave you all alone in this world," she said, again showing how truly naive she was on the subject. "But if you'd like, I can ask around.. find out about your family for you."

Jonas felt an annoyance growing in him as he listened to her. She didn't seem to understand, though how could she when she wasn't like him? She didn't need to fear for her life everyday, wonder where her family was. She was safe. He frowned, shaking his head, "I won't let you do that...help me, find people to help me. I don't know them, I don't know their true nature. I can't trust random people now, I still hardly even trust you," he told her. Why did she have to be so positive? This wasn't the type of situation you could find anything positive about.
He looked at her as if she were completely stupid as she spoke of his family. "They wouldn't leave me alone if they could help it, but it's hard not to if people are gassing you," he said, with a snappish edge to his voice. "Don't bother trying to find any information about them, I doubt that's even possible.." He looked away from her, focusing down on the table. "You really do not understand anything..."

Amelinda stared at him, her smile faltering as he said those things to her. She set her face to a blank expression and stood up after a minute, bringing her glass to the sink. She gnawed on the inside of her lip, not really knowing what to say to him now. What could she say, though? He was absolutely right.. she knew nothing of what was happening in the world, she just thought she did. She stood at the sink still, taking a deep breath before turning back to him.
"I'm sorry. Feel free to help yourself to anything you need and if there is something you can't find, feel free to ask me," she said to him, her tone curt and clipped now, though it was just a way to hide the hurt. "Now, don't mind me.. I have some things to do in here.." she told him, taking another deep breath before bustling around the kitchen, gathering things up to prepare dinner. They had servants in the house, yes, but she enjoyed cooking and preparing food for everyone and often did it when she wasn't too busy with other things or off on a trip with her father.

Jonas felt bad..briefly. He would've apologized if it'd been different times, but what he'd said had been true. She didn't understand and she was making him sick with her behavior, trying to make everything out to be better than it really was. He sighed quietly, watching her get up and go to the sink. He looked away from her, holding her glass tightly between his hands.
He frowned as he listened to her, noticing the curt, clipped tone. He glanced at her again as she went about cleaning the kitchen, which he found somewhat odd, since he'd noticed a servant or two. He slowly pushed back his chair with a grating scrape across the floor. He got to his feet, carrying his glass over to the sink, setting it down beside it. He glanced at her briefly, "I think it'd be best for me to just leave," he said quietly, looking at her out of the corner of his eye.

Amelinda cleaned the counters meticulously before setting the different food down on it. She pulled a knife out of seemingly nowhere and started chopping up the vegetables she had gathered, focusing entirely on her task. When Jonas set his glass beside the sink she set the knife down to go wash it.
When Jonas said he thought it would be better if he left she clenched her jaw to keep from blurting something out. She slowly turned to look at him, frowning as she studied him for a minute. "If that's what you wish.." she said to him. "If you're going to go at least let me give you things that you'll need.. like food and water.."

Jonas watched her as she chopped up the vegetables. The food looked so good, he hadn't had an actual meal from home in days now. He'd been just eating bread and things that were easy for him. He shook his head, trying not to think on it too much as he continued to watch her work, making his mind focus on her cleaning and cutting, not about his family.
He hesitated, "I don't want to be a burden..and I'm just not the best of people right now, I don't want to anger you or your family," he said quietly, meeting her gaze as she studied him, waiting for her response now, stuffing his hands into his pockets.

Amelinda set the glass down on the counter to dry, moving back over to the vegetables, continuing to cut them all up, making small little piles of all the different vegetables. She sighed, shaking her head some.
"My family is very hard to anger," she mumbled, more to herself than him but still loud enough for him to hear. "And you really wouldn't be a burden.. My mother is curious about you, she'll want to know more about you. And my father isn't here.. he's out on a trip," she told him. "So you don't need to worry about him.." She paused, realizing that she was trying to make him stay and she shouldn't be doing that if he didn't want to really stay. "But if you want to go then go.."
