He watched her get up to get his soup, giving her a quick smile when she handed his stew to him. He thanked her again, eating a few bites. He was glad to hear someone would think he'd be a good father though she hardly knew him in the first place. Oh well. He was still happy to hear it. He glanced at her briefly after a few more bites. "Twenty-eight," he responded, "And still not married..my mother was never pleased about that.." He shook his head, "She wanted lots of grandchildren by now, I'm glad now it never happened..not yet as least." He watched her a moment, "Now, I answered that, what about you? How old are you?"

Amelinda smiled at him. "Fair enough, I suppose. I'll be turning twenty three in two months," she told him. "And not planning on getting married anytime soon," she added, grinning slightly. "Were you ever close to marrying someone? Just to please your mother?" she asked him curiously. She finished up her stew but it didn't look like she was about to get up and start cleaning just yet. She looked down at the table, tracing random patterns over the surface of it.

He slowly nodded, he had decided she was going to be younger than him. Most girls wouldn't be his age and still unmarried. He ate his stew as he listened to her, smiling faintly as he looked down at it. He glanced up at her briefly, shaking his head, "I wouldn't marry someone I didn't love just to please my mother," he responded. "I wouldn't be able to do that..what if I never came to love them? I can't imagine living my life like that."

Amelinda nodded her head some. "Maybe you wouldn't have loved them romantically, but you might have grown to love them as a friend," she said quietly with a hint of anger in her voice, still looking down at the table. She shrugged slightly after a minute. "I'm sorry.. that was a bit out of line," she said, looking up at him finally.

He noticed the anger, and was rather confused about it. He looked at her a moment before shaking his head. "I suppose, I would come to love them as a friend, but that'd still be weird..having a family with someone I only thought of and loved as a friend," he stated. He studied her, frowning some, "I would like to love my wife romantically, rather than as a friend. It's just something I've always thought of with marriage.." He shook his head, "It's fine, I don't mind.."

"And what if you had no choice? If the person wanted to marry you but you only liked them as a friend, but you had no choice. What would you do then?" Amelinda asked him, still sounding a tad angry. She bit her lip to keep quiet, to keep from saying anything else then. She looked over at her mother briefly who was frowning at her before she stood up and left the table, disappearing from the kitchen then.

Jonas was silent for awhile after she said that. He thought about this as he finished off his second bowl of stew, carefully pushing to the side once it was empty. He crossed his arms, studying her. He wondered why she sounded so angry about this subject. Had something happened that brought up this subject and the anger over it? He frowned to himself, "I suppose, if I had no choice, I would marry them and hope..it evolved into more," he said quietly, watching her. "Why do you ask all this?"

Amelinda shrugged her shoulders. "No reason," she said quickly, maybe too quickly for it to sound like a normal response. She sighed and got up, beginning to clean the kitchen. She placed her bowl and spoon in the sink and turned to him. "Do you want any more?" she asked him as she reached to take his bowl.
As she was reaching for his bowl Johanna rushed into the kitchen and grabbed Amelinda's arm, looking at Jonas then her worriedly. "Mistress you have to hide him now. There are soldiers at the door and they don't look happy," she said, sounding relatively calm though there was a hint of panic in her voice. She looked at Jonas again briefly before rushing to answer the door and come up with some reason to stall and give Amelinda enough time to hide Jonas somewhere.
Amelinda's face had turned stony and she set the bowl down, turning to Jonas. "Follow me," she said, turning on her heel and striding towards a staircase at the back of the kitchen. It was the servant's staircase that led upstairs to everything so they could clean without being seen that much. She traveled up the stairs quickly, barely making any sound.

He shook his head slightly, not prodding any further on the subject though he thought he may bother her on it later. He smiled some and shook his head, "No, I've had enough, thank you," he responded. He pushed his bowl closer to her so she could take it.
He was startled when Johanna suddenly appeared and spoke to Amelinda. He felt his breath stop when he heard her. He shouldn't be here..he was putting them all in danger. His heart pickd up its pace and he got to his feet quickly, snatching his jacket and bag from the back of his chair as Johanna left them again. He looked at Amelinda briefly, nodding slightly, following her to the stairscase then up it just as quickly, his breath coming quickly as his mind raced.

Amelinda reached the top of the stairs and headed down a long, open hallway to the last room. She opened the door and slipped inside, waiting for Jonas before shutting it behind him. It was a lavishly furnished room, but that didn't matter now. She moved quickly across the room, standing near the bed. She pushed against the wall lightly and it snapped open like a cabinet. "My parents had this built for me when I was younger so I could have a place to just play in," she explained. It was a small room with a little couch and a large doll house. "You'll be safe here. Nobody but myself and my parents know where it is and you can't see it from our side."
She glanced back at the door of her room worriedly, wondering how long Johanna would be able to hold the soldier's off before they started to search the house. Her thoughts wandered to who had tipped them off in the first place and she frowned slightly, looking back at Jonas. "As soon as I'm sure they're gone I'll come and get you."

Jonas followed her up the stairs, to the last room down the hall, his heart hammering in his chest. He hated living in this fear, the fear that'd taken over his life now. He glanced around the lavish room, though didn't really take any of it in as he moved after her across near the bed. He watched the wall snap open, rather surprised by it, he had wondered how he was supposed to hide in the room anyway. He looked into the small room, with the couch and doll house. He would've made some comment about the room in any other situation, though now really wasn't the time.
He walked into the little room, turning around to face her. "I'm sorry..for all this," he said after a moment. It really was his fault the soldiers were here, it was the only reason. He didn't like being such a danger for anyone, and was already deciding that he'd leave after this, he couldn't stay hiding in her house, leaving this family in danger. He gazed at her a moment, "Thanks though...and be careful with them.." he mumbled, moving further back into the room.

Amelinda shook her head slightly. "Don't be sorry. It's not really your fault. This isn't the first search of our house they've conducted," she told him, smiling briefly to try and lighten the mood. "And don't worry about anything.. they never really come up here, and if they do they won't be able to find you. Nobody's ever been able to find this place unless they know about it," she told him, smiling again briefly. She glanced towards the door as she heard some raised voices coming from downstairs and knew she had to leave to go try and placate the soldiers and get them to just leave peacefully. She looked back at Jonas briefly. "I'll be back for you as soon as they leave," she told him before carefully closing the door/wall and turning on her heel, striding out of her room.
She headed downstairs, confronting the soldiers with a frown on her face. "Just what is the meaning of this intrusion?" she asked them, crossing her arms over her chest in a defiant position.

He slowly nodded, not really taking in what she was saying and what he did take in didn't make him feel any better about the situation. He didn't return her smile, his face blank again, like he'd been for weeks now. He glanced toward the door as he heard the raised voices downstairs before he focused back on her. He slowly nodded to her words, "Okay..." he said after a moment, watching the door shut as she left. He glanced around the room, pacing awhile before he sat down, listening to the voices downstairs, unable to understand them though.

Amelinda had a heated discussion with the soldiers about how they were disrupting the peace of the house and they had no business there, but they insisted on searching the house because somebody had said there was a Jew hiding somewhere inside. Amelinda silently promised that she would find out who had told and made sure they never got work anywhere ever again. After another exchange of words Amelinda told them to just search the house, promising that they wouldn't find anything or anybody there.

Jonas listened to the drone of the voices downstairs, the different pitches, waiting for them to start shouting and destroying the house, though it didn't seem like that was going to happen. He could hear them start searching. He stayed extremely still in the room now, thinking pacing would make noises and cause attention to be drawn to this area of the house. He closed his eyes, sitting on the floor, his lips moving soundlessly to a prayer as he waited.
