The soldier speaking flipped a switch in his mind, like he finally realized what was going on. Faxon drew himself up, green eyes blazing to life in a new found rage. Rather then turning on the soldier, he moved forward, taking Daniela by the wrists and giving them a sharp twist after her next words..
"Love doesn't take sides?" He spat, giving her wrist another painful twist, drawing her arm up. How was this possible? How could she possibly be saying that? "Love is just an instinct, something to keep humanity alive and barbaric. You let it control you, and you are no better off then the mongrel man you married." The major released her, throwing her arms down and grabbing for his pistol.

Daniela bit back a shriek of pain at the startling grasp. Her wrists remained red with his handprints even after he removed them. Before he could get to his pistol, she stood and slapped him hard across the face.
"How dare you." she said in a deadly calm, cold voice. "Insult me, mock me, but don't you dare mock my husband." she said, "You're my friend and I trusted you. Otherwise I would have let you drown your career with my lies!"

Faxon gave a stunned groan, his face tingling from the impact.
"My career." He repeated, his tone level again. His hands were shaking, though. Anger and fear both mixed into one package. "That's all I have to worry about. You, though....you're a traitor." That was a crime punishable worse then death, and he said it quietly. Faxon made no mention that his own life was in danger for waiting this long to turn her in, she should know that already. What were they going to do?

"I haven't betrayed anyone yet!" she said loudly, but not loudly enough to carry through the door. "I told you the truth!" Her words were full of nine years of bitter tears. "I was trying to get him out, that was all. If you're not going to help me, then please don't try to stop me!"

"That /is/ betraying, Daniela!" He said desperately, slouching his shoulders back. That was the first time he had used her first name for a long time, despite the friendship they had.
"What are you going to do? I can't let you leave. What were you thinking?" He reached for his pistol again, this time with a grudging hand, and aimed it at the soldier. To his credit, his hands weren't shaking.

She sighed, looking at the floor. "If that's your decision..." she said. "I hope you have a good life." she sat on the edge of the table. Then, what seemed like an out of the blue comment, "Congratulations on your promotion by the way. Major, that's quite impressive if I do say so myself."

Faxon narrowed his eyes again, but there was no anger in it. He drew his lip back in a leering grin, but that again contained no notable emotion. "You can't guilt-trip me that way, Lady. It won't work. That promotion will be worthless in a few hours." He lied. It did make him feel guilty, that she would risk her own safety to help him out. Yes, she was probably doing it just so she would have his favor, but it was beyond that. There were limits. Ignoring it, he asked: "Why him? There are plenty of others out there." And she should have had no trouble finding a better one. The Englishman was handsome, Faxon agreed, but only in the way a well-groomed dog was beautiful. Pampered.

Daniela looked at Charlie with the look of happiness only he had ever given her. "Because I love him." she said, "It's irrational and I can't explain it." she said, looking back at Faxon, "I love him and there's no changing it. I've tried so many times, but I just can't stop." she still had the happiness in her voice and on her face, "And let's not play games, Fax. I know the system just as well as you, they'd barely look at one prisoner's escape. They escape all the time."

That was it, then. His friend was lost. There would be no persuading her otherwise, and you couldn't change an infatuated mind with violence. Despite what new marvels you could do with today's sciences.
And that look in her face. Serene in her own foolish bliss. Her and her man, that English dog. What could he do but feel slightly jealous and completely beaten? Cur against, well, a pure Aryan. He wasn't going to shoot her. Or the soldier. If only to save that pure look. Why did it have to happen this way?
"I would know." He tried, losing his fight quickly.

Charles was about to attack the Nazi but they fight soon stopped. He watched as the German and his wife talked, what a strange friendship and then it was over. Standing Charles walked over to Daniela grasping her hand and pulling her back into him, he had no weapons but if the Nazi wanted to fight, well, Charles would gladly accept.

She did something very unexpected then, she hugged Faxon. It was a warm friendly hug. Then she kissed his cheek. "You are a good friend. You have always been a good friend. I wish I could have been the same to you. I'm sorry I had to play that promotion card."

Faxon gave a testy click, pulling his head back as the soldier moved up and took the Lady by the hand, pulling her away. He had the childish impulse to grab her other arm and pull back, stand her next to him, rather then Faxon playing the odd man out. But he didn't.
And he couldn't hug back. He wanted to, dearly to return the motion and share in a friendly embrace, but his mind was shocked out of it. When she drew back, she gave him a sense of sad loss, but happiness all the same. With a sigh, he straightened up, giving the soldier one last glare. He wasn't helping him, he was helping the Lady. Which directly led to helping the soldier, but it helped to think it was all for his friend.
"How are we going to do this, then? We can't just walk him out; they would know already he was something of some importance."

"You could put him in a cell on the outer edge of the camp." she said, "I can come back for him when no one is paying attention." she had stepped back towards Charlie now, his nearness giving her comfort. "Thank you, Fax..." she whispered, "I'll repay you someday." she said.

"Damn right you will." He said seriously, not sure himself if he was joking or not. Faxon stood by, ready to break the two apart. "I'll escort him, then, and make sure the guards are either gone, distracted, or know you'll be there to receive him. I could set it up that there will be a transport waiting. You would only have to say you're moving him. They have no right to question you." The major paused, shamed. He was the traitor now. The perfect Nazi. The perfect machine. Disobeying father and country for a friend and her unworthy husband. Suicide was his next option, or he could live the rest of his days feeling like the scum he was riding the world of.
"Where will you go?"

"The only place we will be safe." she said, "Britain." she put her hands on his shoulders and bowed her head, "I will miss you, Fax." she said, "Maybe we'll meet again on better terms." Then she let go and nodded to him, looking back at Charlie.
