London tried to open her front door as quietly as possible, not wanting to wake Jonas. It was almost one in the morning, and she was just getting home from work. Of course, she was wearing a very risque red dress that was rather low cut. She usually either went to bed or changed clothes before Jonas saw her, mostly for comfort, as those dresses weren't the most comfortable things in the world.
She slipped inside the door as it opened, closing it gently behind her. She hung her coat up without yet turning around to look into her flat or turn on the light.

Jonas had begun to wonder about her late nights, often awake whenever she arrived to the flat, though he never opened his eyes or said anything. He'd been having trouble sleeping since leaving Germany, his dreams plagued by nightmares and dreams of his family. It was often that he woke up crying in the middle of the night or fighting against the blanket that always got twisted around his legs. Tonight was no different. He had just woken up from another nightmare, the blanket wound tightly around his waist and through his legs, his chest bare and somewhat sweaty. He was sitting up, rubbing his face when she slipped through the front door.
He lifted his face to look at her, taking in her form in the red dress, frowning a little. He took in the time, sitting up a little more. "London.." he said after a moment, "What is it...that you do exactly?" he asked finally...he'd started having his suspicions but he wasn't going to ask her if they were true.

She sighed, turning around. After a moment, she walked over to the couch, sitting down on the arm farthest from his head. "Ah... I knew it was only a matter of time before this came up." she said. She wasn't frightened, and she wouldn't try to hide it, but she was worried about losing her only real friend in London (the city), as she had grown very fond of him over the past week. "I'm a... Well, I'm a whore." she said, "No use sugar coating it. I am what I am." He'd probably walk out soon. He was a Jewish boy, they didn't approve of whores, which was one reason why she hadn't told him.

Jonas watched her come over to the couch, trying his hardest not to let his eyes run over her in the low cut dress. He shifted, focusing on her eyes as she sat down. He had the blanket tangled around him still, and he didn't bother disentangling himself right then. He slowly nodded as she said what she was. Just what he was beginning to suspect. He was silent for a few minutes, frowning somewhat, "Why?" he asked finally, he didn't know why she would want to sell herself to men.

London chuckled, "Because it's a cruel world we live in." she said, "Because I watched my mother get beaten by drunks and often raped, living in a musty old pub from the day I was born. I watched her struggle to feed herself, let alone me. And because it was only idea that occured to me when I was trying to persuade some men not to burn that pub, musty as it was, because my mother could not pay the debt she owed them. I paid them back, and I've kept my mother affloat. After a while, I just didn't know what else to do with myself."

Jonas was very quiet as she gave her story, barely moving, staring at the ground. He shifted slightly, lifting his eyes to look at her. "T-that's understandable, I suppose.." he said after a moment. "But have you ever thought of marriage? Then..you'd no longer need to continue with such a job. You wouldn't need to be a different man every night and you'd have a steady life.." He frowned a little to himself, running a hand through his hair again. "Such a job..isn't safe for you.." he mumbled. He really didn't like the thought of her being with strange men at night...anything could happen to her.

She sighed. "Marriage requires love." she said, "And if I did get married and stopped working as a whore, my family is still going to need money. I'm a Scottish woman in England, I'm not going to get hired anywhere else, and if I do, I'll be paid far less than a British woman would be. They have no problem with sharing my bed, but working with me is a totally different story." she said, "And like I said, I've never loved someone enough to marry them."
She smiled at him, shifting so that she was sitting on his legs, as the arm of the chair had begun to hurt her backside, "Aww, you're worried about me..." she said, reaching out and taking his hand, "That's very sweet... but I can take care of myself."

"I'm sure you can find someone to love," he stated, thinking everyone had someone in the world they could come to love and marry. Though marriage did not always require love, as she said. "And your husband can provide for your family. That is what he's supposed to do.." He frowned as she said no one would hire her anywhere else. "But any job, though paid less, would be better than what you're doing to yourself now.." He sighed, doubting he'd change her any, but it could always be worth a try.
He shifted a little as she sat herself on his legs, actually going a bit pink as she took his hand, saying he was worried about her. Which he was. He made a brief face, "And how would you protect yourself if a man decided to take more than you wanted?" he asked her. "Like your life.." He'd heard various stories of such instances.

She smiled, "If I marry, I want to be truly, madly, deeply in love." she said. "And truthfully, Jonas, you're the only man that's ever given a rat's tail either way about me." she chuckled, "Even after all that's happened to you, you still think the world works as perfectly as they say it does?" she raised her eyebrow, but gently rubbed his hand to show that she wouldn't hold it against him. Actually, she kind of liked that about him. "And a job is worthless if I don't get paid enough to live off of." she smiled again, "I know you haven't known me long, but do I come across as a woman that can just sit back and be provided for?" she asked.
She sighed at his next question, laying down against his chest. It really didn't mean anything sexual, she just was tired and lonely and needed a friend. "I know how to defend myself. Do you seriously think I could have lived in a pub for fifteen years and not know how to defend myself?"

Jonas shook his head slightly, frowning to himself. He felt bad, that she'd never had a man truly care about what happened with her and it frustrated him a little. He frowned more at her words, "I need to think that way...to get through everything else," he said quietly. He watched her rub his hand, turning his to grasp onto hers, stilling it. He shook his head, "No, you really aren't that way..but perhaps it'd be better if you were.." he commented, glancing up at her briefly.
He shifted as she laid down on his chest, barely breathing. He knew she only did it in a friendly way, but he really wasn't used to being so close to a woman..having her lay on him. It made him feel rather hot...and he tried to think of her as one of his sisters..to keep down the excitement brewing down there because of the feel of her laying against him in the small..revealing..red dress. He made a slight face, "I guess so..." he mumbled, barely audible.

"Would you like or respect me nearly as much if I laid back and let someone else take care of me?" she sighed, "Especially now... We're in the middle of the war, everyone needs to do their part, and I make up for what I do in my spare time. I definitely wouldn't have this flat if I were working in some factory. I'd live in some group home, and where would that put you?"
She could tell that she was getting him a little hot by laying on him. (What kind of prostitute would she be if she didn't know?) Still, she didn't move, she didn't think him about to act on anything, and she didn't think she would mind so terribly if he did. She really liked Jonas, and was glad that he was staying with her. "You haven't been sleeping well, have you?" she asked out of nowhere, "I can tell... Sometimes I'll hear you tossing and turning, and I'll come out to wake you, but I never can bring myself to do it..." she sighed, "Are you sure you don't want to sleep in the bed? I'll sleep on the couch if that'll make you feel better."

He shrugged a little, thinking he'd probably respect her the same..or more so if she let someone else take care of her. A prostitute didn't have a very high standing in the respect category for him..but she was probably higher for him than any others because he knew her. He sighed, "I'd have found somewhere to stay. I'm sure there are a few others who might take in a stranger..." He wasn't too sure of that..but if there was one there had to be more.
He was succeeding a little in thinking of her as a sister as she lay on him, shifting a little, tempted to push her off. And he was too much of a gentleman to act on how he was feeling. He was surprised by the change of subject..but he should get used to that...as she did that often. He shook his head some in response, "Nightmares plague me..." he said after a moment, his brow creasing a little as he thought of them. "And I don't think putting out of your bed would improve them any.."

"You don't know the people of London very well, then." she said, "Back home, in Shetland, mam always taught me to be kind to others and to share what you have. Here in London, they learn to be selfish and keep everything for themselves." she sighed again.
"I wish I could help you..." she said softly, running her hands up his sides, only to wrap them around his chest in a friendly embrace. "I could make for you what my mother used to make for me when I had nightmares and couldn't sleep. I think I will... Remind me, before I go to sleep..."

"I guess I don't.." he responded, sighing softly. He didn't know what was wrong with people, when they cared only for themselves. He felt that was the whole problem with what was going on with the Nazis. No one cared for anyone but themselves so they didn't bother with what was happening right next to them. He rubbed a hand through his hair before resting it behind his head, staring at her.
He closed his eyes as her hands ran up his sides, not helping him any, nor did her embrace..no matter how friendly it was. He was now certain she would notice his little..problem and he shifted a little, trying to get into a different position. He nodded a little, giving a slight smile, "That'd be nice...I'll try to remind you..if I remember."

London gave a little giggle, "Would you like me to move?" she asked him, definitely feeling his 'problem.' She briefly wondered if it was for her, and not what she was and the way she was dressed. "I suppose I can go make that drink for you..." she said, though she found herself not wanting to leave him now. It didn't bother her that he was excited, it happened a lot around her, but with Jonas, she kind of felt guilty because he was a good guy, a respectable guy. Still, just because he was excited, didn't mean she was going to have sex with him.
